Description

Begin your adventure at Addo Elephant National Park by entering through the Main Gate (or Matyholweni Gate if coming from Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha side). Pick up a park map and self-drive guide. Embark on a morning game drive, the best time for spotting elephants, lions, buffalo, and antelope while they’re still active in the cool air. Drive towards Hapoor Dam, famous for large elephant herds. Stop for breakfast at the Main Rest Camp for breakfast at the park’s restaurant or enjoy a packed picnic at Jack’s Picnic Site. Continue your safari drive, exploring different loops (e.g., Gorah Loop, Zuurkop Lookout) for chances to spot kudu, zebra, and warthogs. Stop at Zuurkop Lookout Point – you can get out of your vehicle here and enjoy panoramic views. Return to Main Camp for a sit-down lunch overlooking the waterhole. Visit the interpretive center/museum to learn about Addo’s history and wildlife. In the afternoon, take a different route (try the Southern Loop or head towards Ngulube Waterhole) for variety. Look out for elusive species like hyena, caracal, or even the flightless dung beetle unique to Addo. Enjoy a quick break at a designated picnic spot. Book a sunset guided drive with a tour guide (lasts ~2 hours). Guides know where predators were last spotted. This is a great chance to see nocturnal animals starting to move. Leave via your entry gate (closing times vary depending on the season, usually between 18:30–19:00).
