Description

Begin your adventure with a convenient pickup from your hotel or lodge. Relax as you travel to the Baviaanskloof, a narrow valley just under 200 kilometers in length, bounded by the Baviaanskloof Mountains to the north and the Kouga Mountains to the south. Explore the valley, which lies at a lower altitude than the Karoo in the north. Learn how the rainfall of the Karoo filters through the mountains to the Baviaanskloof River, creating a surprisingly lush environment that supports a wide variety of plant species. Discover three biomes with five veld types in the valley. On the northern slopes, find the Spekboomveld and Valley Bushveld. On the southern slopes, see the flourishing Cape Fynbos. In the long side valleys, explore the Knysna Forest vegetation. On the mountain plateaus, encounter the Rhinoceros Veldt and Grassland. Marvel at the widespread succulent Karoo bush in the valley, which is why the Baviaanskloof is classified as a part of the Little Karoo. Because of this spectacular diversity of plant species, an impressive variety of birds can be found in the valley. In the Baviaanskloof, the wildlife matches the diversity of the plants. There are fifty-six reptile species, twenty-three being endemic to South Africa and three found only in the Baviaanskloof. The valley is also home to seventeen amphibian and fifteen fish species. Enjoy a delicious braai lunch in the park before heading back to your hotel or lodge.
