Rietrivier
Eastern Cape
At a glance
Rietrivier is a four-day hiking trail covering 24 kilometres in the foothills of the Baviaanskloof Mountains near Willowmore in the Eastern Cape. The trail forms part of a wider outdoor destination that combines walking routes with cave accommodation and other activities on a working farm.
The hiking experience is centred on the natural landscape around the Baviaanskloof. The route is suited to visitors looking for a multi-day walk rather than a short outing, with four days allowing time to travel through the mountain foothills at a steady pace. The setting also supports mountain biking and 4x4 activities, giving active travellers several ways to explore the area.
Accommodation is available in a selection of cave spaces, including Makkedaat Cave and other individually named units. The caves offer an unusual rural stay that connects directly with the surrounding landscape. Braai facilities are available, and a stove helps make the caves suitable for winter visits as well as warmer months. The atmosphere is off-grid and outdoors-focused, with simple access to walking, cycling and driving routes.
Rietrivier suits hikers, nature-focused travellers, cyclists and visitors seeking a slower stay away from conventional accommodation. It also works for small groups planning an outdoor break, subject to the capacity and arrangement of the selected cave. The property is a practical base for exploring the Baviaanskloof area, while the trail provides the main draw for visitors interested in a longer walk.
Access is possible by sedan via Willowmore and Uniondale. The road through the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area is restricted to 4x4 vehicles, so route planning matters when approaching the area. The wilderness gates close at 16:00 and reopen at 05:00. Fuel is not available in the Baviaanskloof, and there are no ATM or card facilities in the kloof, making preparation in Willowmore or elsewhere before departure important.
Mobile phone reception is not available in the Baviaanskloof. Visitors should travel with sufficient cash, a serviceable spare wheel and the tools needed to change a flat tyre. Pets are not permitted in the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area. Rietrivier is best suited to travellers who are comfortable with limited services, mountain conditions and an accommodation experience shaped by the landscape rather than by resort-style facilities.
