Description
Enter Addo Elephant National Park through the Main Gate or Matyholweni Gate (from the Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha side). Collect your park map and self-drive guide upon arrival.
Start with a morning game drive, the best time to see active elephants, lions, buffalo, and antelope. Head towards Hapoor Dam, known for large elephant herds.
Stop for breakfast at the Main Rest Camp restaurant or enjoy a packed picnic at Jack’s Picnic Site.
Continue exploring different routes such as the Gorah Loop and Zuurkop Lookout. At Zuurkop Lookout Point, you can exit your vehicle to take in the panoramic views.
Return to the Main Camp for lunch overlooking the waterhole. Visit the interpretive center to learn about Addo’s wildlife and history.
In the afternoon, take an alternative route like the Southern Loop or visit Ngulube Waterhole for additional wildlife sightings, including hyena, caracal, and the unique flightless dung beetle.
Take a short break at one of the park’s picnic spots. Consider booking a sunset guided drive lasting approximately two hours, led by experienced guides who track recent predator activity. This drive offers opportunities to see nocturnal animals becoming active.
Exit the park through your entry gate before closing time, which varies seasonally between 18:30 and 19:00.
