Eastern Cape Climate
The Eastern Cape in South Africa is an area of contrasting and diverse landscapes and this variety is definitely reflected by its weather. Coastal areas of the Eastern Cape such as Port Elizabeth and Jeffrey’s Bay tend to experience a sunny, moderate and pleasant climate, often a little drier and hotter than that of the neighbouring Garden Route.
Winters in the Eastern Cape are mild and short and there are usually only a few cold snaps. Winter temperatures tend to fall between about 9°C and 21°C. With a yearly average of 7-8 hours of sunshine a day, it’s not hard to see why the Eastern Cape weather makes it a popular holiday spot.
Summer temperatures in the Eastern Cape can reach up to 30°C and evenings are usually long and warm, meaning they are perfect for relaxing evening meals overlooking some spectacular stretches of Eastern Cape coastline.
As you head north in the Eastern Cape the climate becomes increasingly sub-tropical and areas along the stunning Wild Coast tend to see a higher rainfall than other areas, although temperatures are often a touch higher. The majority of rain falls in the summer time in the Wild Coast region, although there are still plenty of hours of sunshine to enjoy.
The inland Eastern Cape regions such as the Karoo have a more arid, desert-like climate. Summers are generally long, dry and very hot and winters are reasonably mild during the day, but be prepared for some very low temperatures at night – sometimes even freezing.
